Rethymno is a Greek nome on the island of Crete that simultaneously borders on Chania and Heraklion. The administrative center of the region is placed in Rethymno. Built by the Venetians, the third Greek city according to its population, Rethymno is an operating port and a tourist center of Greece.
Rethymno has a well-developed resort infrastructure. Apart from numerous bars, restaurants and nightclubs, it has many museums and unique places of interest. In the first place, it is a famous Fortezza fortress, that has been a symbol of the city for a long time.
There are plenty of beaches located on the Rethymno coastline. Some of them can be found right in the city. Others are either “wild” or situated near coastal villages and resort centers of the region. For example, Panormo, Bali, Agia Galini, Agios Pavlos, Plakias etc.
Rethymno gives great opportunities for active recreation – from diving to yachting and cycling around beautiful places. There is a big variety of SPA-centers and fitness clubs on the nome territory. Three large water parks are placed under Rethymno – "Star Beach", "Limnoupolis" and "WaterCity".
The nome of Rethymno is famous not only for its amazing wild nature but its gorgeous mountains as well. A part of Ida or Psiloritis massif with five peaks goes through the region. The highest peak is Timios-Stavros (2456 m). According to the legend, one of its caves was the place where great Zeus the Thunderer came into this world.
