Agios Nikolaos is a popular place of recreation on the island of Crete and an administrative center of Lassithi. The resort is located only 60 km away from the airport of the main city of the island – Heraklion. Right in the center of the city is a unique Voulismeni lake where, as the legend states, Artemis and Athena goddesses liked to bathe in ancient times.
There are taverns and restaurants offering Greek and European dishes next to the lake and in a local port. A lot of streets full of different stores stretch in many directions from the coastline of Agios Nikolaos. The population of the city is about 30 000 people, most of them work in the spheres of tourism or agriculture.
The beaches of the resort are mainly sandy ones with long-angle bottoms – quite comfortable and safe for bathing vacationers. Places of recreation are equipped rather well. Many of them have playgrounds and pools for children. The coast of the city is surrounded by thick groves of trees, reeds and rushes.
One of the most beautiful beaches of Crete, Vulisma, is located in the vicinity of Agios Nikolaos. An amazing bay enclosed by inapproachable rocks outstands with pure crystal seawater and soft sand. Apart from Vulisma, the region has many other good beaches – Mochlos, Ammos, Almiros, Driros, Istro, Gurnia etc.
